9 May 1960. The Queen in tears, could it be so?

9 May 1960 My dear Len & Margaret This is Monday evening & Liberation Day which is a holiday. Margaret & Charles are here. They came to tea. It's now gone 9 'o clock but no one speaks, all eyes on T.V. or others reading. So I thought I could just write a few lines instead of being like a mute, not saying any thing & not interested in T.V. I guess you would do the same if you were in my place, oh maybe you would not though because I don't think writing is much in your line. It has been a lovely day. This morning was fine & dry, but no sun. The afternoon has been sunny & warm. I had a very busy time this A.M. Roselle being home I thought she did not want me to fuss around her, I decided to wash the flower pots. I had hinted at Father some time back that it was time they were washed & put away, but Father did not seem to want to hear what I was saying. So today my holiday was to wash the flower pots. I erected a place to put my washing t...

31 January 1960. Coffee party and speaking ones mind

31 January 1960 My dear Len & Margaret This is Sunday afternoon. I thought I would make a start on this letter. My Canadian letters are just about done. It's not often I'm about finished with them so early.  The weather has been lovely today. Sunshine almost all day. The air is cold but it's dry. There seem to be plenty traffic on the road. People are taking advantage of this fine weather. According to the radio you seem to be having plenty snow in some parts of Scotland, have you got much round your way? However soon the worst of the winter will be over. Tomorrow brings February, once January is out the days lengthen & the sun gets a little warmer day by day.  Day by day I am waiting to know if the Royal baby has arrived. It should not be very long now. I am wondering if the great day will happen on Len's birthday. If it's a girl this is the names I will like her to have: Victoria, Elisabeth, Caroline & if a fourth name Mary. If it's a ...

20 May 1958. Emigration worries and multi coloured carnations

Image
20 May 1958 My dear Len and Margaret Again I am writing my letter a little early in the week. Well how are you all getting on? I guess you are now getting settled with your new surroundings, also that you have made a few friends and that Margaret is now liking it over there. As for you Len, are you finding work going to your liking? I do hope you are to build up a good business as you have done to the other places you have been, and show good results. Do you understand all this broad accent well, or do you find it difficult when you go round for business? But then as you have been in Edinburgh before this broad accent would be easier for you. How do the children manage it at school? Children pick up language very quickly, don’t they? How are they getting on with their home lessons? I quite agree they may not like it over much, at the same time a little home work is good for them, especially for Susan at her age now. She will want to get on, you see having moved so many tim...
