18 April 1960. Formica topped table and Jersey Wonders

18 April 1960 My dear Len and Margaret This is Easter Monday afternoon. It’s a nice sunny day but there is a cold wind. Yesterday was fine and sunny also but again a cold wind. On the whole it’s been a lovely Easter. I don’t like these holidays for the reason that, we get no Evening Post or no mail. There has been no mail since Saturday. I find that too long. Margaret and Charles were having tea here yesterday. Doreen and her family were supposed to have tea with us on Good Friday but they only came for the afternoon. Doreen said if they remained to tea they would have to go back early on account of the twins who have to go to bed early, it would have meant coming back to a cold house and again too late to settle down to an evening. They decided it better not to stay here, they went back at 6 o’clock.   Kay and Arthur came during the evening. It was a wet evening, it started to rain during the afternoon, which spoilt it for people who were out. We are invited to a...

31 March 1959. The Zoo; not so interested and choir singing

31 March 1959 My dear Len and Margaret Although it’s now gone 9 o’clock and I’ve finished my Canadian letters, I feel I must start a few lines on my Glasgow letter, otherwise you good people will not receive your weekly letter. I blame holidays for this, why must there be holidays, they disturb the usual routine. In less than 3 hours March will have passed away, it is disappearing as a lamb, today has been perfect weather, sunshine the whole day. It has been like a summer day, the sun was warm. Yesterday Easter Monday was fine and dry, but there was a cold wind, people needed their coats. Still it was fine enough for people to go out in the country, this made up for Sunday’s rainy day. Wednesday evening Here I am again to see if I can get through this letter so that it can be mailed in the morning. I don’t really like to be so late with my letters. I am trying hard so that you can have it. First of all I want to thank you very much for the lovely picture you sent us...

23 March 1959. Goodbye's and first day of Spring

23 March 1959 My dear Len. + Margaret This is Monday evening & very early to make a start on your letter, but it's better to make an early start & make sure to have it finished in time for mailing at the right time. Is Lennard properly settled after his short Jersey holiday? When we came back from the airport after seeing Len. off, Roselle had gone to work, but before she left, she had cleaned & set both fires ready for lighting. Also she had stripped Len's bed, folded the sheets ready for the laundry, also washed the few breakfast dishes we had used & set the table again for if we wanted a little more breakfast & got herself ready for work. I thought she should never have done all that work in such a short time as she had before leaving for work. All the same Dad was pleased not to have the fires to see to before getting ready for work, but as I said, I could have done them myself. I guess that Margaret was pleased to see you back, I hope all...

8 April 1958. Lovely Jersey Wonders, theft and robbery

Image
8 April 1958 My dear Len and Margaret This is Tuesday eve. I'm making a little start on my letter to make sure that it started. Today has still been pretty cold, the sun came out for a little while this afternoon. At the moment for a change father is listening to the wireless. Wilfred Pickles and Mabel his wife, are in Alderney on the air there I don't know what they're talking about. I think it's 'Have a Go', of course dad is interested in Wilfred. This gives us a rest from TV. I have spoken too quickly,  Dad is already through with the Alderney programme which lasted only half an hour, now without taking any time TV is on. We had an Easter card from Cyril and Grace also a letter, Cyril is not too good, he is now getting out of breath when he walks to work. Well as you remember he was bad with thrombosis two or three years ago. Since then he has had to take things easy. Now that he has developed getting out of breath he decided to see the doctor ab...
