19 December 1960. Christmas club haul

19 December 1960 My dear Len & Margaret Monday eve. This is really a too busy week for writing.  I have made my Canadian letters rather brief.  I went to town this A.M. I still had a few purchases to do, so took advantage of the dry weather, though there was a shower while I was in town.  I don't find it looks like Christmas in town, business is not over good. I guess the next few days will be a rush. Margaret wants me to go to town on Thursday A.M. but I doubt if I will go. My money is spent so I must stand by now.  I'm not sure if I have told you what I bought with my club books, with my tea cards & in number. I bought 7 lbs. of tea, this I will keep as a standby for some time. For my food store I bought 12 tins of salmon & of crab, 6 large tins of sliced peaches, 3 small ones, 6 large tins of apricots, 6 tins of sardines, 2 tins corned beef, 1 tin chocolate biscuits, 2 jars apricot jam, 2 tins Scottish broth soup. Then after Roselle...

22 September 1958. Fixing up, extendid family, international food

22 September 1958 My dear Len and Aile [1] Margaret, This is Monday eve. The weather is getting like autumn. We are looking forward to seeing Kay and Arthur tomorrow. They are at Alençon today and I think sleep there this night, tomorrow they get to St Malo then home. I hope they have a good crossing tomorrow eve. The Brittany arrives back at about 10 o’clock PM. Kay wrote to Roselle asking her if she would see about asking the men at De Gruchy’s to fetch their car at Sandiway during the day tomorrow and take it to the pier so that Arthur can come back in their own car and call at home.  Roselle has just left, she has gone to Sandiway to see that everything is alright and put some flowers on the tables to welcome them home. The Constable of St Helier passed away in the early hours of this A.M., he has been very ill for many months. The funeral takes place on Thursday at noon at St James Church. They don’t give time to the poor man to get cold that they are already w...

8 April 1958. Lovely Jersey Wonders, theft and robbery

8 April 1958 My dear Len and Margaret This is Tuesday eve. I'm making a little start on my letter to make sure that it started. Today has still been pretty cold, the sun came out for a little while this afternoon. At the moment for a change father is listening to the wireless. Wilfred Pickles and Mabel his wife, are in Alderney on the air there I don't know what they're talking about. I think it's 'Have a Go', of course dad is interested in Wilfred. This gives us a rest from TV. I have spoken too quickly,  Dad is already through with the Alderney programme which lasted only half an hour, now without taking any time TV is on. We had an Easter card from Cyril and Grace also a letter, Cyril is not too good, he is now getting out of breath when he walks to work. Well as you remember he was bad with thrombosis two or three years ago. Since then he has had to take things easy. Now that he has developed getting out of breath he decided to see the doctor ab...
